Polyol / Isocyanate(MDI)

Polyol, POP and MDI — the two halves of polyurethane, supplied to foam producers for automotive seating, furniture and insulation.

Polyurethane is made by reacting two liquids. SK pucore supplies both sides — the polyol, which carries most of the formulation, and the isocyanate that cures it. What the finished foam does, whether it holds a driver in place for ten years or keeps a refrigerator cold, is decided in that formulation rather than in the moulding.

Materials

  • Polyol — polypropylene glycol and polyol grades, the base of the formulation
  • POP — polymer polyol, used where the foam has to carry load without going hard
  • MDI — isocyanate, supplied as solution

Applications

Automotive — seat cushions, seat backs and headrests. Foam for a seat has to return to shape after years of use and stay within its original dimensions, which is a different requirement from comfort alone.

Furniture — sofa cushions and mattresses.

Insulation — rigid foam for heat insulation, including refrigerator cabinets, where the foam both insulates and stiffens the case.
